Abstract: The immediate effect of fire on chemical soil parameters as well as their changes with time were studied in a Pinus radiata afforestation, comparing the effect of fire in a plot with trees and in another cut before the fire. The main changes after fire were observed in the upper layer (0-2 cm), where a decrease in total organic carbon, available phosphorus and soluble K and Mg was detected. Changes in the lower layer (2-5 cm) were not important. The second year after the fire was characterized by an increase in nutrients and the majority of the analized parameters reached values similar to the control. The status of the plots before the burning did not influence the immediate effect of fire on the soil, although it affected the ash content.
