Abstract

Field experiments were conducted to study the effects of sewage sludge applications on soil productivity and soil properties.

The soil was amended with sewage sludge at the rates of 5, 10, 20 and 40 Mg.ha-1. Winter barley and corn were grown consecutively to maturity.

The yields increased with increasing rates of sludge application. Significant differences in soil pH and soil organic matter content between the highest rate of sludge and control were observed. Addition of sludge to the acidic soil did not cause any significant effect on fractions soil organic matter. The water soluble fraction of soil organic matter increased while the lignin fraction decreased following the sludge application.

Addition of sludge did not increase the trace metal levels in soil. The chemical forms of all metals were not affected by the sludge amendment.

Key words: Sludge, soils, organic matter, trace metals.
