Abstract

Two different phosphorus fractions were measured in the drainage wáter of 36.3 km2 catch- ment devoted to agroforestry and located at the Valiñas river (Coruña, Spain). For three successive years, 1999, 2000 and 2001 total, sedimentary and dissolved phosphorus fractions were determined. A few events of intensive precipitation are responsible for most of the losses of total phosphorus, mobilizing sediments from different source areas, mainly from recent tilled areas. The total phosphorus exported during the stromflow of these periods is mainly composed of particulate phosphorus. During base flow periods the dissolved phosphorus concentration in water was attenuated and the ratio dissolved phosphorus/total phosphorus increased.

Key words: diffuse contamination, eutrophication, total phosphorus, dissolved phosphorus.
